Remembering Forward brings together a new body of work by Ya’qub Shabazz that explores memory as an active force—something carried, revisited, and reworked over time.

These paintings do not look backward in a nostalgic way. Instead, they move through memory as a process of construction—where past experiences, environments, and moments of transition continue to shape how we see and understand the present.

Working in layered surfaces and restrained palettes, Shabazz builds compositions that hold tension rather than resolve it. Figures and forms emerge, overlap, and repeat, suggesting a continuous negotiation between what has been lived and what is still unfolding.

This exhibition marks a moment of expansion in scale and approach, presenting new works alongside select pieces that have informed this direction. Together, they offer a space to consider how memory operates—not as something fixed, but as something that guides movement forward.
